PCP, is a dissociative drug formerly used as an anesthetic, exhibiting hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects. It was first patented in 1952 by the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company, marketed under the brand name Sernyl. PCP is listed as a Schedule II drug in the U.S. There are many variations of PCP, the "street drug", as amateurs often make their batches with substitutes for the pharmaceutical ingredients. PCP alters distribution of the neurotransmitter glutamate (involved in the perception of pain) throughout the brain. Thus, users are sometimes unable to protect themselves from, or have little fear of physical harm that is alerted by a sense of pain. PCP has earned notoriety with Law Enforcement as its users sometimes exhibit extraordinary violence and strength when being apprehended! When the liquid form of the drug is applied to a leafy substance and smoked, it is referred to as "Angel Dust" or "Sherm". In other forms it is referred to as "Rocket Fuel" or "Embalming Fluid". When observing PCP users, its dissociative effect becomes strikingly apparent. Visually, users can be identified by staggering, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. Sometimes they appear to be in trance-like state. They often wander aimlessly with impaired vision and inability to relate to their surroundings brought on by the hallucinogenic characteristics of the drug. Users preference for the drug lies in their enjoyment of what they perceive as a feeling of escapism! Most people that try PCP for the 1st time are turned away from continued use by its ability to induce extreme paranoia! Some people have extremely bad experiences if their supply has consistently been in a reduced strength that they can handle, and they inadvertently acquire a full strength dose of PCP! This can result in a trip to the mental ward for observation and detoxification. By far, the most devastating characteristic of the drug is its neurotoxic effects. Long term users may experience permanent or semi-permanent reduction in cognitive abilities, particularly memory and logical deduction. I personally have seen users of the drug who have become permanently disabled, and unable to care for themselves!
